iPad 3 parts start leaking like a tap

Assuming most people would know by now that the release of iPad 3 is on the horizon (first quarter of 2012?) and with the release drawing nearer each day, it's inevitable for iPad 3's parts to be leaked out of the manufacturing plants and made known to the world via the World Wide Web. There have been several leaks so far and the latest one by 9to5Mac shows a side-by-side comparison of the Home button of iPad 2 and (supposedly) iPad 3. The front of the buttons look pretty much identical but flipping them over reveal a very subtle difference. No one can tell for sure the legitimacy the photos but one thing's for sure: more leaks will definitely make their way to the web before the official announcement of the iPad 3...

Thunderbolt invading PCs in 2012

Light Peak, as it was initially called was adopted by Apple and then renamed Thunderbolt. The PC platform has been reluctant to implement the technology due to its high cost and with USB3.0 still not widely adopted. Thunderbolt is only seen on high-end devices today and they are pretty darn rare. However, the cost of Thunderbolt technology is believe to drop in the second half of 2012 and it should encourage a wider adoption on the PC platform and external storage devices. This definitely doesn't signal the decline/death of USB technology cause both are very likely to co-exist, like how USB does with Firewire...

iPad 3 on Steve Job's birthday?

We've heard rumors about a high resolution screen that will likely be a huge selling point in the upcoming iPad 3, rumored to be released in the first quarter of 2012. It's now reported by FocusTaiwan that Apple is pushing manufacturers to release the next iteration of iPad on Steve Job's birthday, which falls on the 24th February. However, manufacturers have claimed that it would be challenging considering many Chinese workers will be taking off during the Lunar New Year period that falls on the 23rd and 24th January, resulting in manpower constrain. Well, if you ask me, if the workers are paid good money during the festive period, I'm sure most of them are willing to work through it...

Rejoice for PS Vita launch prematurely shortened

Sure, fans of Sony's new handheld, the PS Vita are able to get their hands on them this past weekend, well, at least in Japan, that is. Unfortunately, some of their rejoice have been prematurely shortened upon installing day-one system update or while playing Dynasty Warriors Next because there have been reports of system freezing, which (for now) can only reset by holding down the power button. Sony has acknowledged the problem and there are also reports of the PS Vita not being to turn on as well as an unresponsive touchscreen. But they're thought to be user related problems instead of hardware malfunctions. Hopefully this isn't a widespread problem and Sony's able to iron out the kinks before the PS Vita is released worldwide...

Firefox 9 released, sort of...

Although Google Chrome has surpassed Mozilla's Firefox in market share, Mozilla's in the 'never give up' spirit to redeem their lead. Releasing frequent updates to their browser has shown that it annoys users more than anything else. And automatic (background) updating is said to not be around till a few revisions of Firefox later. Whatever it is, loyal fans of Firefox can grab hold of the latest revision of Firefox, which is version 9 from Mozilla's download servers. It won't be officially available for download via their website until tomorrow, so hit the respective links below to grab your copy...

New Galaxy Tab To Have High Res Screen. iPad 3 Soon After?

We have heard rumors about iPad 3 having a high resolution screen, double the resolution of current generation iPad 2 (and iPad 1). Surprisingly (or maybe not), Samsung is rumored to better that slightly by having a screen consisting of 2500x1600 pixels on their new Galaxy Tab. Compare that to iPad 3's rumored screen resolution of 2048x1536, that's quite a bit of pixels more. However, at the end of the day, it still boils down to the applications that will harness the resolution and not having them up-scaled to fit the screen, that will be ugly won't it? Both of which are rumored to be released to the public within Q1 2012, which is highly unlikely for iPad 3 by the way...

Next-next Generation Era

That's exactly where we are at. Now that most of the next generation consoles are at least 5 years old, the rumors of when the next-next generation consoles would be released are starting to surface. It is known that we are expecting the Wii U next year, Microsoft's presumably called Xbox 720 box announcement by E3 2012, and Sony has said that they do not want to release the 'PS4' much later than the competitors. However, Sony has also claimed that the PS3 still has much life in it. I don't know how Sony's going to work things out; on one hand the PS3 can still kick some serious ass, on the other hand they don't want to be too far off with their next-next generation console with the competitors....

I'm also not exactly sure of the rational behind console refreshes because ultimately the contents (i.e. games) are still the most important. Sure, with more powerful consoles, developers have room to improve on animations, effects, AI and everything else, but that translates to more time and effort needing to be spent and this would ultimately drive cost of games up, taking into consideration that games these days are already quite insanely expensive...

Do you think we really need the Wii U, Xbox 720 or the PS4? Seeing how the first party developers can usually churn out great looking games on the respective consoles, should multi-platform game developers just spend more time optimizing their games for the various consoles instead?

DIY Privacy Screen

Now if you're sick and tired of having someone (or some people) peeking into your screen at a LAN party or just to surf porn without being caught, there is a way to completely privatize the contents being displayed on your monitor even with bystanders staring right into it and see nothing but a completely white screen! You have to possess some technical skills with your hands to achieve this DIY task however and also requiring to don a pair of polarized glasses to work. But hey, if you want complete privacy, I'm sure you'll go all out to get it done won't you? ;-)

HDD Shortage Likely Through 2012

Major hard disk manufacturers like Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba have factories in Thailand and the recent floods there have partially submerged them, affecting HDD production and causing a massive shortage, resulting in prices of existing stocks to skyrocket almost 100%(!), at least in my area. Seagate's Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Luczo has said that the shortage will last till the end of 2012, AT LEAST. Time for the HDD to consider setting up factories in places without natural disasters instead of going for cheaper labor, which indirectly bites them hard?

15" MacBook Air (or Pro?) Coming Q1 2012?

There have been rumors going around for Apple to adopt the slim design of the MacBook Air with a 15" display. But it's pretty unclear as to whether it will be replacing the MacBook Pro or will co-exist with them and remain in the MacBook Air family. It's been reported that Apple is finishing the final touches of the 15" ultrathin notebook is almost ready for factory mass production. Will we see Apple ditching the Super Drive and adopt a drive-less laptop for the MacBook Pro series? We'll have to wait till sometime in March 2012, that's at least the rumored release date, for now...

iOS 5.0.1 Released

Yes, iOS 5.0.1 is finally released and the main reason most are looking forward to this update is to address the battery problem apparently existing in quite a lot of iPhone 4S. This update also provides several other updates including gestures for the original iPad...

"This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation"

This update is for iPhone (4S, 4, 3GS), iPod Touch (3rd & 4th generation) and all iPads...

iPad 3 Coming Late 2012. But iPad 2 Upgrade First?

We are in this era where we kinda expect Apple to churn out new products at least once a year though most often than not, they turn out to be upgrades more than anything else. Just like how we expect to see an iPad 2 upgrade in 2012 that will be thinner and lighter than the current generation iPads, which I'm hearing people are indeed complaining about the weight despite already shaving off a little bit of it from iPad 1. We have however heard about the rumored iPad with the ultimate high resolution retina display since before iPad 2 was released, well, it is now reported that the supposedly called iPad 3 will be released no earlier than third quarter of 2012; definitely not before the upgrade of iPad 2 is out (iPad 2S maybe?) sometime in March 2012...

Ice Cream Sandwich coming to (some) HTC phones

Ice Cream Sandwich, Google's latest mobile operating system for tablets and phones was recently announced and Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is the launch phone to have Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed. Well, fret not, more companies will eventually have Ice Cream Sandwich running their phones and HTC is one of them. They have announced a few models (unsurprisingly the more powerful phones) to have Ice Cream Sandwich rolled out to them in early 2012. HTC will have to face a task of incorporating Sense into the OS, so hopefully it won't take longer than their predicted launch dates to get it out...

PS3 Finally Catching Up After Almost 5 Years

The console war has been going on amongst the three gaming giants since forever and it's always a battle of the figures for the number of consoles sold. Sony lost its throne with the PS3, falling behind Microsoft and initial sales of the PS3 was poor due to its high production cost. Over the years, we've seen design and size changes made to the PS3 that enabled Sony to bring production cost down and reduce the loss of each console sold. Almost five years since its launch, the PS3 is finally closing up the gap of the sales figures with the Xbox360 by about 200,000 units in the year to year Q2 sales in 2010/2011. But the figures never quite always indicate whether they meant shipment or sales to customers in retail. Despite Nintendo experiencing huge losses recently, they are still at the top. It's rumored that both Microsoft and Sony may tease a new console at E3 in 2012, we'll have to wait and see whether the rumor is true...

Remember the iPhone 4S battery drainage issue that I was talking about not too long ago? Well, apparently Apple has acknowledged the problem and a fix seems to be on its way as it's indicated in the change log of iOS 5.0.1. We'll see whether it does rectify the problem once the updated firmware gets into the hands of the public...

People play games for different reasons, generally to de-stress, for the story and some just want to play as God. However, for those looking to play games just for the violence and gore, you're in luck! Developers are always pushing the boundaries to ensure they don't cross the line, resulting in a mature rating or even a ban on the title, ultimately affecting sales. Well, it looks like 2K Games is willing to take on the challenge in producing what seems to be the most gory game ever produced with the sequel, Darkness 2. Check out the trailer, seems pretty bloody indeed!

Siri iPhone 4 & iPod Touch? Not quite...

Despite only being in beta, Siri has been quite promising in its capabilities so far. For now, Siri is unfortunately only found in the new iPhone 4S, but not for long. Hackers have been able to hack it and get it running on the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch, though not to its full functionality. Because Siri requires an internet connection to authenticate with Apple's server for responses, hacked version of Siri will naturally be unable to receive authentication and therefore will not be able to respond to questions. It's also reported Siri does run pretty well on the iPhone 4 and the user experience is similar to that of when using it on the iPhone 4S. On the iPod Touch however, due to the poorer microphone, the user has to speak louder for Siri to 'hear' what was spoken...

iPhone 4[S]hort Battery Life

So, 22 more countries (mine included) have just received their batch of the new iPhone 4S and long queues were seen at the launch, naturally. Like most (or all) electronic gadgets these days, the first batch are usually not without problems. It's been reported that users have been facing really short battery life, draining at up to 10% per hour with minimal usage and most (if not all) background applications closed. Apple does seem to have acknowledge the problem and is very likely to be scrambling to find the cause and solution to it ASAP as of now. Users have been suggested to install an app on the phone to monitor the activities for a day and send the log back to Apple for troubleshooting. Have you got your iPhone 4S? If you have, are you facing a similar problem? Hopefully a software fix will rectify it, unlike the antenna problem with the iPhone 4, which was a hardware issue...
